"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime."
- Mark Twain

DAY 14: QUOTE

What’s your favorite quote about travel? Why does it stand out to you?

I once posted daily travel quotes, hailed by some magazine as the "50 Most Inspiring Travel Quotes of All Time." My two favorites made it at numbers 1 and 19. They're both wisdom from the mouth of Mark Twain, and probably rank on a lot of people's lists.

The top one rings true in every way -- seeing the world, learning about something outside yourself, witnessing other ways of living, it changes your perspective. You're no longer allowed to pretend the world is full of people like you, which may be one of life's great lessons in a time when our society grows more and more self-centered.

While the first quote occupies a solid spot on my Facebook info. page, this second one has been my email signature for years. It's almost romantic. And while a lot of people use just the last three words, it's better as a whole quote, a gentle reminder to GO and grasp opportunity when you can.

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."
- Mark Twain

And because I really hate picking favorites, a few other goodies:

“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.”
- St. Augustine

"For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move."
- Robert Louis Stevenson

"Avrai tu l'universo, resti l'Italia a me." (You may have the universe, if I may have Italy.)
- Giuseppe Verdi

"Travel is glamorous only in retrospect."
- Paul Theroux

What you’ve done becomes the judge of what you’re going to do - especially in other people’s minds. When you’re traveling, you are what you are right there and then. People don’t have your past to hold against you. No yesterdays on the road."
- William Least Heat Moon

"The journey not the arrival matters."
- T. S. Eliot

Nothing like some good words from the man himself. A couple of phrases of Twain, and I'm ready for a cigar, a double scotch and my backpack.

Great post! These quotes are two of my favorites and have been in rotation in my email signature for many moons too. Gotta love Mark Twain...
